Donald surfs to another Treble
Aussie Cameron Donald, on board the Wilson Craig / Robinsons Concrete Hondas, and under the guidance of former Racer, uel Duncan, continued his dominance of the Irish road race scene, when he scored a treble at the kells road races on Sunday last.
And as an added bonus, the circuit newcomer, also set a new absolute circuit record at almost 112 mph!- Awesome!
Cameron opened his kells account in the 600 race when he saw off early race leader Darran Lindsay, however, Donegal rider, Raymond Porter on the DMRR Honda was making inroads , and he set a new 600 lap record on his way to second place.. Lindsay took 3rd , whilst Martin Finnegan got the better of a race long duel with Adrian Archibald.
William Dunlop scored a somewhat easy win in the 250 race, when he had a 10 second victory over his brother Michael, who was on board the ex Norman Rank Honda, Michael got the better of a superb dice, which saw Darran Burns loose out to Dunlop at the final bend, Barry Davison was 4th ahead of Andrew Courtney with Yarno Holland loosing out to compete the top 6.Pre race favourite, Darran Lindsay was a first lap retirement.
The Support championship races continued to serve up some excellent racing. In the 400 class, Leo Fitzgearld scored a somewhat easier win than he expected, as his arch rival Stephen O Brien struggled with carburetion problems, and could only muster 11th place! English visitor, Paul Newton was 2nd ahead of RJ Woolsley , whilst female racer, Elle Forrest had a tremendous ride to take 4th ahead of Dave Broderick and Declan Lynch.
In the 750 class, Wayne Kirwan kept his cool to hold of the ever so close attentions of Andrew Brady , but it was second group rider, Kevin Fitzpatrick took 2nd on corrected time, pushing Brady back to 3rd ahead of stylish Wayne Kennedy , Michael Fitzpatrick and Niall Scollan.
In the 125 class, Robert Dunlp was looking for his 5th consecutive win in this class, but a last corner shake up , saw 3rd placeman, Darran Lindsay nip through to win from Dunlop with Marc Curtin 3rd. Michael Dunlop was 4th ahead of cousin Samuel and Darran Burns in 6th.
In the open race, Cameron Donald topped the result sheets with a fine win, beating Ray Porter , with a best ever performance by John Walsh, as he took 3rd place. Kawasaki rider Carl Rennei was 4th ahead of Archibald and Martin Finnegan, who started in group 2, as his chain broke on the opening lap of his timed practice!.
Cameron set a new lap record at 111.319 mph.
The Grand Final saw Cameron Donald come from the second row to take the imeediate lead, this he stretched throughout the race, at the flag, of a brilliant race, the Aussie celebrated victory with a massive wheelie, as he beat Porter and Finnegan in what was a fitting finale to a superb meeting. En route to his Grand Final success, Cameron set another new circuit record at an amazing 111.936 mph!, and his average speed was 109.744, which was almost as fast as Ryan Farquhars previous lap record!. Farquhar was on hand to see his lap record being broken, and also competed a few laps on his old Kawasaki machine, between races. Back to the results, and John Walsh had another fine performance when he took 4th ahead of John Donnan, who was having a rare outing , with Archibald in 6th place,.
Next week, it is the turn of the Faugheen road races, and it was here last year that Cameron Donald made his Irish Road Race debut, no doubt, like many, he will be looking forward to this event.
